Amaza Africa - is the Xhosa word for "Waves of Africa"

This time around the worlds top international riders travelled to Africa and our film crew followed them in a four-event competition that stretched over a distance of 2000km. The World Waveski Series took place during a period of 21 days with the start at Van Riebeak Strand, Cape Town. The beach break provided fantastic offshore 4 - 6 foot conditions with the surprise late entry to the Cape Town leg from Nicki Carstens to the series. The standouts were Julien Billard, Neil Decker, Mathieu Bararit and Mr Carstens himself.

After two days of great action in the cool Atlantic waters the tour progressed slowly up the East Coast to the ample of secret surf spots that the uncrowded coastline of South Africa holds within.

The world renowned Jeffrey's Bay was the next schedule competition stop. Magna Tubes delivered the goods and provided solid conditions with spectacular heats in great perfection. J-Bay's natural beauty will always be a picture to see and just one of those places every surfer needs to visit once in his life. Although the air temperature was mid winter and the Reunion Island boys frozen ice blocks, the British were having a blast in the powerful 5footers rolling in.

The journey continued to where John Christenson won the 1995 world titles, Nahoon Reef. At first the place was totally out of control and with the Easterly wind howling away the event was postponed with one day. Conditions quickly changed as the South West ensured a strong off shore with solid 6 to 8 foot conditions. The power of the Reef caught riders by surprise and made for testy conditions with many of the top riders dropping out of the early rounds. It was at the end a French man that sneaked in from the bottom to take out 3 local riders to win the Nahoon leg.

The last leg of the 4-event competition ended on the tropical beaches of Durban with event organiser Pey Geldenhuys and his team pulling out all the stops for a memorable event. Conditions were mostly around the 4-foot range with some days peaking at 6-foot. There were lots of standouts and the title surely did not come easy to the winner. But one true champion was crowned with the title. One champion over the 4-events really showed consistency for riding the waves of Africa.
